Ocimum basilicum ‘Evivi Ntor’
Evivi Ntor Basil is a treasured heirloom from Ghana, traditionally grown by the Ewe tribe and preserved through generations of seed saving. The name “Evivi Ntor” translates as “very tasty,” a fitting tribute to its bold, aromatic leaves. This variety was safeguarded by Ghanaian seed steward Solomon Amuzu, who received it from an 86-year-old Ewe elder, ensuring that its unique cultural and culinary legacy would continue to thrive.
This basil offers a bright, peppery profile with distinct citrus and floral notes, making it a versatile herb for flavouring soups, stews, sauces, and traditional drinks. Its complex taste lends itself beautifully to modern kitchens as well, enhancing fresh juices or spiced herbal teas. The plants are also highly aromatic and can serve a dual purpose as a culinary and ornamental herb.
Sow seeds onto the surface of moist, fertile seedling mix and press gently without covering. Basil requires light to germinate and warmth to thrive, so maintain soil temperatures between 21 and 29°C. Germination takes 6 to 10 days. Transplant or thin once seedlings are large enough to handle.
Evivi Ntor Basil is compact, growing to about 60 cm in height, and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Space plants 20 to 30 cm apart. It is both heat- and drought-tolerant, making it well suited for summer gardens. Plants are typically ready for harvest from 60 to 75 days after sowing and will produce continuously if trimmed regularly.
